After finally breaching the 90m mark, India’s javelin-throw ace Neeraj Chopra sets his eyes on the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial 2025. Chopra aims to carry the momentum from Doha last week to the event scheduled in Chorzow, Poland on Friday, May 22. The exciting Janusz Kusocinski Memorial athletics meet will be the player’s third Javelin event of the year.
The 27-year-old rising Javelin player won the Potch Invitational Meet in Potchefstroom in South Africa with his 84.52m throw in April before pulling off a career-best milestone and national record at the Doha Diamond League last week with his 90.23m throw. It was the first time that Chopra overhauled the long-awaited 90m mark in his playing career.
Chopra’s 90m milestone gave him much to celebrate in Doha despite Germany’s Julian Weber bagging the Diamond League crown with his personal best of 91.06m on the final throw. He now has the chance to avenge the defeat against the former European champion at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial 2025 in Poland and firm up his claims of defending the World Championship crown in Tokyo later in the year.
Also taking part in the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial will be Anderson Peters, the two-time world champion and Paris 2024 bronze medal winner. Representing the local challenge will be national record holder Marcin Krukowski and Cyprian Mrzygłód apart from other notable participants.
Earlier scheduled to take part in the NC Classic in Bengaluru on May 24, Neeraj Chopra now competes in Poland after the event’s postponement opened up the player’s calendar. Named after a legendary Polish long-distance runner Janusz Kusocinski, the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial gives Chopra a chance to back his Doha milestone with another. The event has a men’s javelin throw record of 91.50m held by Czechia’s Jan Zelezny, who is currently Chopra’s coach. The ace player will be setting his eyes on the record in Poland.
