Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 could be the rebadged version of the Jimny and in developed markets, it could be re-engineered to take on Ford Bronco Sport
Toyota officially submitted an application for the trademark of the Land Cruiser FJ in Japan a while ago. It is anticipated that the name will be employed for an upcoming compact SUV, drawing inspiration from the latest Land Cruiser Prado and it could have a lot in common with the Maruti Suzuki Jimny lifestyle off-road SUV.
The brand provided a sneak peek of an upcoming compact off-road SUV during the debut of the Land Cruiser 250 series. This new model is set to be available in various international markets including the United States and Japan in the near future. According to reports, the vehicle will feature a robust design and our rendered images indicate the same.
Given Toyota’s well-established track record of delivering high-quality off-road vehicles, the iconic FJ moniker is likely to evoke strong emotional connections among enthusiasts and it could be dubbed the FJ40 but no official confirmation has been made yet. The rendering shows a front end with an upright finish boasting round LED headlamps, criss-cross grille and a flat bonnet.

The rugged bumper comes with a wide air inlet having hexagonal inserts and projector fog lamps. Other visual highlights are rectangular black finished ORVMs, tall pillars with a flat roofline, muscular wheel arch cladding, side hinged boot with sparewheel mounted on it, tail lamps mounted on the rear bumper, etc.
The Toyota FJ Cruiser was discontinued recently due to poor demand and stringent emission standards after standing the test of time and the upcoming off-roader could as its successor. Speculations that emerged in Japan indicate that it will have a similar size as the Corolla Cross.

Speculations from Japan suggest that the new model might share a similar size with the Corolla Cross, indicating a compact and versatile design for off-road enthusiasts. If it does not turn out to be a badge engineered Jimny, there are multiple options rumoured to be on the table including the possibility of adopting either a ladder frame or a unibody structure.
The former construction is likely to resonate more with dedicated 4×4 enthusiasts. The engine options might reminisce that of the Corolla Cross, and potential choices might also include powertrains from the RAV4 and Prius featuring a hybrid system. The upcoming Toyota Land Cruiser FJ will compete with the Ford Bronco Sport in developed markets and in others, it will likely take on the Suzuki Jimny.
